China's Textile and Apparel Exports Face Challenges and Opportunities

May 13, 2025

According to data from the General Administration of Customs, from January to February 2025, in terms of US dollars, China's cumulative textile and apparel exports reached 42.88 billion US dollars, a year - on - year decrease of 4.5%. The industry is currently grappling with multiple challenges on the international trade front.

One of the most significant threats comes from the United States. There are indications that the US may raise tariffs on Chinese textile and apparel products to as high as 60%. This potential tariff hike, if implemented, will severely undermine the price competitiveness of Chinese products in the US market. Given that the US is a major consumer market for Chinese textile and apparel exports, such a policy change will inevitably lead to a sharp decline in China's exports to the US, disrupting long - established trade patterns and causing financial strain on numerous Chinese exporters.

Meanwhile, countries like Vietnam and Cambodia are posing increasing competitive pressure. These nations are leveraging their free trade agreements, which offer preferential tariff treatment in major international markets. For instance, Vietnam has ratified 16 free trade agreements covering over 60 countries, allowing its textile and apparel products to enter markets like the US, EU, and Japan almost tariff - free. Additionally, their relatively low - cost labor forces enable them to offer more competitive prices. As a result, they have successfully attracted a large number of orders that would otherwise have gone to China. Some Chinese - made products, like certain sports shoes, are even being shipped to Vietnam, where the "Made in China" labels are removed and replaced with "Made in Vietnam" to take advantage of the lower tariffs when exporting to the US.

However, the situation is not entirely bleak. Amidst these challenges, there are also promising opportunities. In 2024, China's textile and apparel exports to ASEAN witnessed a year - on - year growth of 6.8%. The ASEAN region, with its growing population and rising purchasing power, has become an increasingly important market for Chinese textile and apparel products. Moreover, exports to the countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative accounted for nearly 55% of the total. These emerging markets, with their expanding economies and infrastructure development, offer vast market potential. They are not only driving demand for consumer - facing textile and apparel products but also for industrial textiles used in construction, energy, and other sectors related to infrastructure building.

TailorMax, a major textile and apparel company, has swiftly adapted to industry changes by diversifying its marketing focus to emerging ASEAN and Belt and Road markets through targeted digital campaigns and local e - commerce partnerships. It has also bolstered innovation with a dedicated R & D team developing functional fabric blends and adopted advanced manufacturing tech for efficiency. Additionally, the company optimized its supply chain by building relationships with multiple suppliers to enable agile sourcing during disruptions like trade tensions. These comprehensive strategies ensure TailorMax can navigate challenges and seize global growth opportunities.
